Calor Phone Call

June 14th, 2010

Saturday morning I received a phone call from a Calor rep.

Me thinks they are beginning to realise they have made a mistake with the 5.5p PL price rise. The salesman was very polite and keen not to lose my custom, obviously the Countywide wheels had gone in to motion about taking over the contract. The Saleman explained the price rise was due to the American dollar and importing the gas (yeah right), but I let him carry on with his prepared speech. The nitty gritty is he offered me 36p PL and a £100 cash back for two years plus if the price went up by over 3p PL in any 3 month period I had the option to pull out of the contract.

I’ve told him to put it all in writing so that I can compare against Countrywide’s offer, but he readily admitted that the Countywide deal was a good one.

I’d be interested to know if anyone else who is currently with Calor and has threatened to move  contracts has had the telephone call as I am convinced that they are now realising their mistake?

A Visit from Countrywide

June 3rd, 2010

Received a visit from the Countrywide Rep yesterday evening with the possibility of me changing over  from Calor.

After inspecting my underground tank which evidently is not the normal type and will require further investigation from the Countrywide engineer ( I thought all tanks were the same), the rep was happy to quote me 33p per litre for the next two refils plus £100 pa for the underground tank. This is for a two year contract and considering I have a full tank from the last Calor refil priced at 40p PL and I have the tank filled approx twice a year I reckon its a pretty good deal.

I now have to wait for the engineers report and if in the unlikely event Countrywide reject me  I will have to think about contacting Calor to investigate why my tank happens to be different, however I will cross that bridge when I come to it.

Anyone who is in the good position of being able to move contracts can do no harm by contacting Countrywide to see what deal they can get. Now that I have a named contact I would be happy to assist.

More news when I hear from the countrywide engineer.

LPG Price Update

May 26th, 2010

Further to my note yesterday of ringing round to find best prices, I had a good chat with the Countrywide area rep yesterday evening, who informed me that he had received quite a few calls from disgruntled Calor users.

Suffice to say he offered me a deal at 33p PL fixed for my next two refils and £100 charge pa for the undergound tank. Considering my next refil is for Jan 2011 I nearly bit his hand off!

He is coming to visit me next week and Providing we do the deal I will post the details so that others can get in on the act. This is great news and proves that with some haggling it is possible to get a good deal.

I also had further conversation with Calor but it seems they were really not that interested in a syndicate price, quoting me only a penny drop from 45.5p PL. Other supply companies seem to be rather taken back by the way Calor has dropped this bombshell and are not really sure why they have put in such a large increase.

So in summary we have:

Countrywide - 33p PL (to be confirmed, fixed for 2 refils and £100 underground tank rental pa).

Extra Fuel (gas) – 36.29, over a period of 14 months the price will vary each month. Last 14 months lowest was 26p PL to 42p PL. (Underground tank rental £120 per year).

Flogas – 38p PL; I suspect after their drumming on the BBC Dominic Littlewood programme a good bit of haggling will get the price down further, (well worth a try).

However, I repeat the best deals will be with the smaller companies.

I will continue to search for lower prices but it may be a struggle getting below 33p PL!

Regards  and many thanks for all your replies.

LPG Prices May 25th 2010

May 25th, 2010

Countrywide – To be confirmed

Extra Fuel (gas) – 36.29, over a period of 14 months the price will vary each month. Last 14 months lowest was 26p PL to 42p PL. (Underground tank rental £120 per year).

Flogas – 38p PL

Calor – After a telephone call they wouldn’t budge on 45.5 PL, (but £89 underground tank charges, fyi this is my current user -  was at 40p PL. Offered me a 1p reduction and a £100 gas voucher whatever that is!

Speaking with various reps the general advice is to shop with the smaller companies who are prepared to haggle.

Will post more prices later.

A letter has Arrived from Calor

May 25th, 2010

A big thank you  for all your comments and it seems from your messages that Calor has been sending out their price increase letters!

Since I haven’t renewed my contract with Calor I thought I’d wait and see what was going to happen next. Sure enough today I received a letter with the first words being

” Economic uncertainty continues to have a servere effect on the prices of fuel and energy products and indeed on our own distribution costs. We have done everything we can to ensure the stability of our prices, however we now regrettably need to apply an increase”. The long of the short being they want to increase the price from 40 pence PL to 45.5 pence PL.

So I am going ot have a little chat with all the other LPG suppliers to see what I can get with some haggling and also talk to Calor and ask them what they thought of the BBC programme that was aired yesterday and see what they say when I tell them I am thinking of  of having a chat to Mr Dominic Littlewood.  I will also try the syndicate proposal to them to get an idea if they are at all interested.

Once I have some prices I will list them on the site.

5.5 pence per litre is a hell of a rise and there is no way I am going to sit back and let them just roll over me.

Incidentally I shall be writing to my newly elected Conservative MP to see what his thoughts are and also to see if he will team up with Geoffrey Cox the Devon MP who is supposedly raising the LPG issue in Parlament.

Form an LPG Syndicate

May 24th, 2010

Did anyone see the programme “Don’t get done get Dom“, an investigative BBC programme which looked in to pricing of LPG from suppliers and in particular Flogas.

I urge you to try and get a download and take a look as it’s all very useful information.

To sum up the LPG prices vary with EACH individual, in other words you could be paying 50p a litre whereas your next door neighbour could be paying 35p, (as shown in this programme). The way to get round this is to combine in to a syndicate and approach the LPG supplier to negotiate a better price.

The Village of Winkleigh in Devonwhich which was shown in the programme,  saved on average £400 per person and in total saved £14000!

Get this, a financial expert interviewed on the programme reckoned a good deal would be approx 35p PL or LESS!

I thought I had a reasonable deal with Calor at 40p PL but I’m certain that the price can be brought down further. So if anyone around the Gloucestershire area is buying LPG from Calor then reply to me on this website and lets see if we can get a syndicate going to reduce the price.

There are 4.2 million people currently using LPG in this country and it looks as if we are being stitched up by LPG suppliers who do not have to answer to offgem.

Installing a Storage Tank

April 13th, 2010

Listed below is some information regarding installation of your LPG storage tank.

Rental of tanks £15 – £22 per quarter.

Installation of tank onto prepared site and pipework to house ~£150 – £200 for an above ground installation, £450 – £500 for below ground installation.

Civil works extra.*

*Note; from personal experience the supply company do not prepare the area for the storage tank, you will either have to hire a contractor or do the work yourself. I had my tank installed underground; I paid £100 for a local farmer to dig out the hole to the required specification supplied by Calor.

Technical suitability

Requires space to site tank with access for vehicle to deliver fresh supplies of fuel. There are some restrictions on the siting of the storage tank. For example, there is a minimum separation distance between the tank and the dwelling (dependant on the volume of the tank) and the driver of the delivery tanker must be able to see the tanker from the storage tank during the filling procedure. There are other restrictions on the siting and installation of tanks (such as proximity to overhead power cables) – the gas supplier will be able to advise.

Building regulations apply to the installation of the boiler, storage tank and associated fuel delivery pipe-work. If and the work is undertaken by a CORGI registered installer then a Building Control Service need not be involved

Fire Walls

The purpose of a fire wall is to protect the LPG bulk tank from thermal radiation from a fire nearby and to ensure that there is an adequate dispersion distance to boundaries where the normal separation distance cannot be achieved.

Constructed from brick, concrete or solid masonry, the fire wall should be imperforate and not less than the height of the vessel.

Fire walls should not be placed on more than two sides of the LPG bulk tank and should be sited between 1m to 1.5m from the nearest point of the tank. In all cases, the natural ventilation should not be significantly impaired.

The construction of a fire wall aims to achieve at least 30 minutes of fire resistance.

Screening Requirements

Brick, stone, non flammable wooden fencing, metal panels – these are all materials that might be considered for screening purposes around surface mounted LPG bulk

tanks.

The proviso is, as always that there is unimpeded ventilation around the tanks, that weeds are kept down, that nothing obstructs the delivery tanker driver’s line of sight, and that nothing encroaches within one metre of the LPG bulk tanks.

Weeds, long grass, deciduous shrubs and trees and any combustible material should be removed from an area similar to the required separation distance.

These are:

Tanks up to 2500 litres = 3 metres

Tanks over 2500 litres = 6 metres

Note: Chemical weed killers (such as Sodium Chlorate) or any other method which might provide a source of ignition should not be used in these areas.

Visual screening should be:

Located at least 1 metre from the vessel

Located on one side only

Either evergreen shrubs or non flammable ranch type fence

It should not interfere with ventilation

Of all screening materials, however, nothing looks more natural than trees and shrubs. They’re not difficult to grow and cost less than bricks and mortar. The main consideration is to plan the selection carefully to allow for location conditions and the ultimate size of the plant. Ideally, the minimum of pruning should be required to ensure the one metre clearance for ventilation and access.

Trenches

When preparing the trench for pipework it should be a minimum of 600mm deep and the width of an ordinary garden spade. You should ensure that the bottom of the trench and the back fill are free of sharp stones / objects as these may damage the pipe. Extra protection may be necessary if the pipe runs below roadways or garden walls etc.

Pipework

The supply pipework should be designed by a specialist to ensure it provides an adequate supply of gas and that it conforms to the relevant standards.

The service pipework between the LPG bulk tank and the building should be installed in a trench, ensuring the route for the pipe is as short and direct as possible. The pipework should not be installed above ground, inside any building, or under the footings of a building.

The contractor installing the LPG bulk tank will normally lay the underground gas pipe that runs from the tank to your house. *(Please note in my case I had to do this myself and get it approved by the supply company, be warned it can prove very difficult and expensive to get this work carried out by a contractor). The pipe will be laid along a prepared trench to the outside wall of your home where it will enter at about 600mm above ground level with a quick acting emergency control valve.

Your central heating contractor will connect the pipe from this valve to the boiler and any other appliances.

Dimensions For The Concrete Base

Tank size: Length x width x depth (m)

1 x 380 litre = 1.7 x 0.65 x 0.15

2 x 380 litre = 1.7 x 2.3 x 0.15

1 x 1200 litre = 2.0 x 1.0 x .015

2 x 1200 litre = 2.0 x 3.0 x 0.15

1 x 2000 litre = 3.1 x 1.0 x 0.15

2 x 2000 litre = 3.1 x 3.0 x 0.15

1 x 3400 litre = 3.8 x 1.2 x .015

2 x 3400 litre 3.8 x 3.4 x 0.15

Construction Requirements

Peg out the base dimension in accordance with the diagram below ensuring that the vessel separation distances have been achieved.

Excavate the ground and provide a consolidated hardcore base.

Use a simple 4:2:1 sand: gravel: cement mix.

Ensure that the base top surface is at ground level.

Ensure the surface is level in both plains.

Allow at least 7 days for the base to cure.

Concrete Base

To support the weight of the LPG bulk tank including the gas contents, a load bearing base is required.

It is important to ensure that the base is adequately sized for the appropriate tank and suitably constructed to ensure stability and correct functioning of the tank valves and fittings.

Where an LPG bulk tank is to be delivered using a trolley, it is essential that the base surface is at ground level.

Be warned; Some LPG supplier companies claim that a suitable LPG tank will cost £150 and £60 rental in the fist 12 months. But this ignores the fact that it will also cost £60 to rent in the second 12 months, in the third twelve months, in the fourth 12 months… in fact for the lifetime of the installation. Over the typical 20 year lifespan of a heating installation, the storage tank will actually cost approximately £650.00

In the vast majority of cases the tank will be owned by the company that supplies the gas, but if you are unsure then you should check this with your own supplier. In general, the supplier will look after the tank and its fittings (their integrity and maintenance) but again check this with your supplier if you are unsure, as legally it needs to be maintained in a safe condition
